The Safe Communities gallery targets socially relevant concerns present in our community. The elderly, ethnic communities, the hearing and visually impaired, the LGBT community and mobility impaired individuals are just some of the communities whose concerns are addressed in this gallery. How can we give these isolated groups a voice that will be heard? Empathy, tolerance and understanding are key to promoting social inclusion.
Showcased in the Safe Communities gallery is a project completed for the Surrey Crime Prevention Society regarding the issue of elder abuse. Four examples were produced by Sullivan Heights Secondary students Carmen Bright (Out with the Old), Sara Caissie (Needless Neglect), Nick Castoro (Fear, for your Life) and Taryn Sudul (Check Out Compassion). Bullying is another severe issue that was taken into consideration by Brad Slavin with his comparison to the bruising of fruit, They're Better Without Bruises. Safety in schools is one concern that will be focused on with ideas such as BASES, a program that assists handicapped students. Each piece of art tells a story through the expression of someone suffering due to an unsafe community.
