Alcohol and drug abuse is a serious and challenging issue. The list of available drugs today is astonishing and includes alcohol, amphetamines, cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, morphine and nicotine. The reduction of substance abuse by secondary school students is critical to preserving their future health and wellness. The Drug Free gallery provides student artists with the opportunity to promote drug free values in their school and community.
Many of the works in the Drug Free gallery share an underlying message of the powerful impact that drugs have on one's life. Nick Castoro's logo, Abstinence Takes Courage, directed toward Alcoholics Anonymous, implies that courage is needed to overcome alcoholism. Janine Fournier's Don't Fry Your Brain uses an actual human brain to give new life to a well-worn cliché. A final work by Brad Slavin, Time is Running Out..., reveals the psychology inherent in teenage drug abuse. Kids use drugs as a means of escape - to numb the pain, but the true reality often brings fatal consequences.
