Description: 2000 Spirit of Youth Mural Project. Childhood [Canada/Multiculturalism/Social Studies/Unity Through Diversity]. Childhood is a time of curiosity and joy, qualities we often lose when growing up.
The setting features a school teacher nurturing her young students with games of 'upside down"
and 'caterpillar crawl." These activites make learning fun while promoting respect, tolerance and
cooperation.
The background is a relief map of Canada showing its natural resources: forestry, oil, gas,
agriculture and fisheries.
The flow of this composition moves from left to right - the scale of children gradually enlarging
to imply growing independence. A leaf held by the girl (to the far right) completes the distinctively
Canadian character of the work.
