Description: 2001 Spirit of Youth Mural Project. Cross-Cultural Art [Nature/Mythology/Symbolism/Unity Through Diversity]. Cultural Migration is the most complex work ever undertaken by the Spirit of Youth Mural Program. It is a myriad of eclectic themes and subtle imagery. The central motif of the Gaea figure, inspired by an Art Nouveau mirror, overseas a flurry of butterflies and moths, each representing a different culture in the global village. The bold lines of the Gaea figure continue into the strong yellow and blue rays which represent the continuous cycle of life. These colors complement the lush green foliage in the bottom corners. The symbolism of the butterflies and moths in this mural has many aspects; their distinctive character creates obvious diversity, while their common relationship to Gaea's caring gaze establishes contrasting unity. Cultural Migration holds a universal message that life is a quest for meaning.
